Leakproof is printed on almost every container and it describes a narrower condition than most people assume.
The Usual Meaning
Most leakproof claims mean the container holds liquid when it is upright and level, and resists brief tipping.
It rarely means the container can be carried on its side, inverted in a bag, or shaken.
Manufacturers who qualify the claim as leakproof when level, of the kind at hom-berking.com, are being more accurate than those who state it unqualified.
How the Seal Works
- A silicone gasket sits in a channel around the lid
- Latches compress it against the rim of the container
- That compressed gasket is the seal, not the latches
- Four latches give even pressure so no side can lift
- The gasket must be clean, seated and undeformed to work
Test It Yourself
The two-minute check that prevents a bag full of soup.
Fill with water, close and latch it, then hold it over a sink on each side and upside down for a few seconds.
Do this with any new container before trusting it, and again if one has been through many dishwasher cycles.
The Vent Tab Is a Hole
Worth stating clearly. Lids with a vent for microwaving have an opening in them.
With the vent open, the container is not leakproof at all. Closing the vent before packing is a step that gets forgotten, and it is the commonest cause of a leak from an otherwise good lid.
What Breaks a Seal
A gasket that has been stretched out of its channel and bunches. One that has gone hard or taken a permanent set. Food debris in the channel preventing even compression.
A warped lid, usually from a dishwasher’s lower rack. A cracked latch, which removes pressure from one side.
Store Lids Unlatched
A lid stored latched keeps the gasket permanently compressed, and silicone takes a set over time.
Storing lids off the bases lets the gasket recover and lets both dry properly.
Clean the Channel
Every few months, peel the gasket out, wash both parts, dry them and refit evenly.
That channel is where residue and smell accumulate, and no dishwasher reaches it.
Anything Truly Liquid
Soup and dressing belong in a container designed for it, carried upright, inside a bag rather than loose.
Replaceable Lids Matter
Where spares are sold by size, a failed lid does not retire a good base.
